In an attempt to start to play more FPS games, Lester bought me Fallout 3 Collector’s Edition for the PS3. I remember when he got this for the PC and couldn’t put it down. I was curious as to why he enjoyed it so much, but I could never get myself to play FPS games since I always end up panicking. Fun fact: I’ve always wanted to try out more FPS games since I enjoyed playing Doom on the 32X and Goldeneye 64 for the N64, but ceased after panicking in a round of CS. That was the time when I solely devoted myself to MMORPG’s and went the way of Ragnarok Online.
After expressing a lot of interest in F3, Lester actually went out and bought it for me! I haven’t gotten that far yet since I just reached Galaxy News Radio, but so far, the ride’s been exhilirating.
F3′s more of an action RPG but it still has FPS elements in it. It’s still taking me a good while to get used to the controls since I have a bad habit of looking down, but I’m loving their targeting system: V.A.T.S. A bad habit of mine is shooting aimlessly out of sheer panic and wasting ammo, forcing me to either run away or do something stupid. At least with V.A.T.S., I can strategically target certain body parts and watch their demise (most of the time) in slow-motion.
Also, there’s something soothing about their radio stations that makes me less scared when I’m wandering around a radiated wasteland plagued with Raiders, Radroaches, Super Mutants, Feral Ghouls, and the like. It makes the game enjoyable! There’s nothing like listening to American 1940′s music while shooting off heads and legs. I still panic when I play, but the music has definitely eased me thus far.
I’ll write more about my experience once I get further into the game. But for now, I’m definitely liking it.
