It was 20 years ago today that the first Mighty Morphin’ Power Rangers episode, “Day of the Dumpster” aired. Since then, the franchise has been a pop culture phenomenon! The Japanese super sentai/ masked hero world eventually took notice and recognizes it as a legitimate sentai brand.
It was a formative force in my childhood. I grew up watching everything up until Zeo. I never had the toys (grew up in a poor household) but I did have friends and family that had them so I was never left out. It’s been good to come back and experience super sentai series from Japan and still appreciate what MMPR did for me as a kid. It really paved the way for a lot of us growing up in the early 1990′s.
To me, it’s come to mean a lot more than nostalgia, good vs. evil and the sort. It’s come realize longevity. This series has done what it takes to have staying power and maintain relevance. You to go to Toys ‘R Us, Walmart, Target, etc. and you will find an entire section. If you think about it, whether you like it or not, they are doing something right. The franchise is an excellent case study of how to mess things up sometimes, yet continue being successful.
Thank you Power Rangers, here’s to another 20 years (even if some of them will be painful to watch lol).
I leave you with this video of the YouTube channel made featuring a Power Rangers Lost Galaxy dubstep mix.
