The Shadow Stormtrooper of Comic Con 2011: Day Four

27 Jul IMG_4550

For a lot of the people that know me, this is the post that they have all been waiting for.

Now for those of you that do not know me, aside from being the gaming / shoe/ food connoisseur that I am, in San Diego, I am known as the short Shadow Stormtrooper. Now if you don’t know what a Shadow Stormtrooper is, first off do not be embarrassed. The character was not in the movies because they were more prevalent in the video games and comics. For a full description click here. In any case, I decided to get into costume on Sunday (day 4 of con) primarily because it was kids day. A big part of what I do in costume aside from taking pictures with random people (as you’ll see in the gallery) is doing charity work with organizations such as the Ronald McDonald House and Make A Wish Foundation.

My time in armor was fun with the exception with the part of my thigh piece breaking off because of my intense movement. Luckily the gash was not noticeable but still hurt me a little on the inside because of the work that I had put into the suit. With the broken piece behind me, I continued walking around the sales floor taking pictures with lots of kids, adults, and other cosplayers. I even had the opportunity to take a picture in the giant Hasbro figure box and sit in Emperor Palpatine’s throne! Furthermore, it ended up that I gained some fans at the end of the day because as I went to a bar (in costume) some people recognized me and pleaded to take more pictures with me (how could I refuse!?)! However, I think that the best part of my time in armor was when Mylene, Abe, Venus, and I went back to the Nintendo Gaming Lounge to pick up some Legend of Zelda t-shirts. It was here where I made an ass out of myself and played “Just Dance 3″ for the Nintendo Wii.

Let me be the first to say that it is extremely hard to dance in armor let alone dance with a group of people like that! Also, the guy at the end was definitely a surprise to me. All in all though, as always, with every convention that I go to in armor, I had tons of fun and would love to do it ALL OVER AGAIN!

And lastly, without further ado, I leave you with pictures from my troop in armor. Enjoy and remember to read, retweet, +1, like, and comment!

Overview of Comic Con 2011: Day Four

27 Jul IMG_4561

With the San Diego International Comic Convention of 2011 finally over, I have to say that just like the previous years before it, I had an amazing time, I met some great people, and I was able to spend even more time with people that I usually am unable to spend time with. A lot of the last day was done in my Shadow Stormtrooper costume where I took random photos everywhere and even danced at the Nintendo Lounge.

After getting to the convention center early, Mylene and I proceeded to make our way to the floor and make any final purchases. It was here where we both realized that we had a panel to attend that was entitled, “Philippine Invasion.” According to the panel’s description, the panel was going to discuss how the influence of the addition of Filipinos in the comic book industry has changed and influenced the industry altogether. When we walked into the panel, the 4 panelists and the moderator took their seats and started off by explaining what was going to be talked about. However, once the 4 Filipino panelists started talking, it really seemed more like 4 uncles sitting down at a party and reminiscing about a time where they sat around and drew comics all day long. Now don’t get me wrong, there was definitely more to it than that. The 4 panelists explained that much like other jobs in the job market, a lot of opportunities are lost primarily because of the ability to outsource the work. Typically, when someone hears the word outsource, they immediately think call centers for technology or medical companies; but in the case of the comic industry, it was very prevalent as well. For those of us that are numbers people they mentioned that because the work was outsourced, they earned about $4.00 a page whereas the standard rate (at the time) was about $12 a page. I don’t want to make this post depressing, so in short, they ended up concluding with the idea that with enough support and hard work, fairness will come your way.

Here is a picture of me and one of the panelists: Gerry Alanguilan I don’t want to give out too much information but his official website can be found here, and his extremely famous Youtube video can be found here.

After the panel, Mylene and I found two of our friends who were in the same panel. The guy that is with me is my friend Daniel who is also a member of the 501st Legion and a Shadow Stormtrooper as well, and the girl with Mylene is a friend of hers since junior high school. It’s good to know that even if distance, work, or other things keep us separated, when we come together, it’s definitely a celebration.

Up above you’ll notice that there is once again another Linda Le photo. And that’s because we had to meet up with her to pick something up for bringing her the awesome manju from Hogetsu Tea Shop. Linda if you’re reading this, thank you for making Comic-Con a huge success. I know you had but a small part in the convention, but the impact you made was huge. Words cannot describe how awesome it is to meet someone as down to earth as you are and as random / fun as you are. Keep doing what you are doing because as a fellow cosplayer and gamer, you are a huge inspiration.

Lastly, I’ll leave you with some photos of my haul from the convention. If you are wondering, no none of it is for sale and I will not negotiate! I love my free stuffs!

23 Jul The Kicks of Comic Con 2011: Day Two
Img_4115

With day 2 complete and 2 more days to go through, the heat does not stop! A lot of the photos are blurry primarily because of all the people that were at the convention pushing me around and me trying to quickly take the photos so that the other attendees, professionals, and exhibitors can go about their business. So I apologize ahead of time. In any case, the first photo I present you with is my Nike SB “Ryu” signed by the producer of the Street Fighter series, Yoshinori Ono.
