With the San Diego International Comic Convention of 2011 finally over, I have to say that just like the previous years before it, I had an amazing time, I met some great people, and I was able to spend even more time with people that I usually am unable to spend time with. A lot of the last day was done in my Shadow Stormtrooper costume where I took random photos everywhere and even danced at the Nintendo Lounge.
After getting to the convention center early, Mylene and I proceeded to make our way to the floor and make any final purchases. It was here where we both realized that we had a panel to attend that was entitled, “Philippine Invasion.” According to the panel’s description, the panel was going to discuss how the influence of the addition of Filipinos in the comic book industry has changed and influenced the industry altogether. When we walked into the panel, the 4 panelists and the moderator took their seats and started off by explaining what was going to be talked about. However, once the 4 Filipino panelists started talking, it really seemed more like 4 uncles sitting down at a party and reminiscing about a time where they sat around and drew comics all day long. Now don’t get me wrong, there was definitely more to it than that. The 4 panelists explained that much like other jobs in the job market, a lot of opportunities are lost primarily because of the ability to outsource the work. Typically, when someone hears the word outsource, they immediately think call centers for technology or medical companies; but in the case of the comic industry, it was very prevalent as well. For those of us that are numbers people they mentioned that because the work was outsourced, they earned about $4.00 a page whereas the standard rate (at the time) was about $12 a page. I don’t want to make this post depressing, so in short, they ended up concluding with the idea that with enough support and hard work, fairness will come your way.

Here is a picture of me and one of the panelists: Gerry Alanguilan I don’t want to give out too much information but his official website can be found here, and his extremely famous Youtube video can be found here.

After the panel, Mylene and I found two of our friends who were in the same panel. The guy that is with me is my friend Daniel who is also a member of the 501st Legion and a Shadow Stormtrooper as well, and the girl with Mylene is a friend of hers since junior high school. It’s good to know that even if distance, work, or other things keep us separated, when we come together, it’s definitely a celebration.
Up above you’ll notice that there is once again another Linda Le photo. And that’s because we had to meet up with her to pick something up for bringing her the awesome manju from Hogetsu Tea Shop. Linda if you’re reading this, thank you for making Comic-Con a huge success. I know you had but a small part in the convention, but the impact you made was huge. Words cannot describe how awesome it is to meet someone as down to earth as you are and as random / fun as you are. Keep doing what you are doing because as a fellow cosplayer and gamer, you are a huge inspiration.
Lastly, I’ll leave you with some photos of my haul from the convention. If you are wondering, no none of it is for sale and I will not negotiate! I love my free stuffs!
